Bicycle Rims

A bicycle rim is a flat, smooth wheel, usually a steel rim, designed specifically for a bicycle. A rim is normally made of some alloy or another material and may be either internally or externally adjustable. Usually the only way to determine the correct rim size for your bicycle is to have it fitted. A set usually consists of at least two wheels, sometimes three, which are used for transporting and balancing bicycles.

A rim is typically made of steel, chrome, or another alloy that will resist corrosion and is weather resistant. There are many different rim designs to choose from including the popular double-sided rims with the cross over spokes, to the non-crossed rims which are more aesthetically pleasing but more prone to damage by abrasion and rust. A wheel may also be laced with a spoke head. Many bike companies produce bicycle rims in a variety of styles suitable for various uses.

The bicycle rims normally come as a complete hub, often with a spindle and chain mounted within it. Hubs differ from rims in that they have one large hub and several smaller ones which fit onto this hub. These bicycle rims are commonly fitted with steel or aluminum spindles, which are usually of circular cross sectional shapes. Spokes can also be found on many bicycle rims, although spokes of the type found on bicycle wheels are much rarer.

Bicycle rims often have a spoke head attached to the rim, although this is not required and not mandatory by any means. spokes are circular, made of steel, copper, or another metal. They are there to carry the wheel's spoke cords, these being attached to the tire at both the rim and the wheel hubs. Spokes can also be found on bicycle wheels, but these are much rarer and not used as much as they used to be.

Bicycle rims are fitted to a bicycle through the use of spokes. These are bent into the shape required for the wheel and brake system, with the bent spokes acting as brakes for slowing down and stopping the bike. Without the spokes, the wheels and the brakes would not function. The number of spokes can be counted in several ways, and the number of bends on the spokes can be measured, but in most cases the number of bends on the rim is more than enough to determine the right rim for the bike.

Hookless bicycle rims are much rarer than normal rims, probably because they are difficult to produce and are only used on bicycles with small tires, such as the mountain bikes. In some places, hookless rims are even required in order to ride a bicycle, while many cities do not allow them. On the other hand, they are more convenient than standard rims.
