What to Look For When Purchasing Carbon Rims

With the introduction of carbon rims, those looking for performance from their bicycle tires are in luck. A carbon rim offers the advantages of stiffness without sacrificing ride quality. Carbon fiber is understood to be twice as stiff as steel, but it is lighter than diamond. It also has less compression to offer and better puncture and tear resistance than steel.

The short answer is carbon rims will last until they are damaged by the means that compromises the strong bond between carbon fiber and the rim. Carbon fiber does not have a fatigue memory unlike steel. This means that the more you ride your wheel, the more prone to wear you are to damaging your rim fast. Carbon fiber rims are very smooth on the road.

Your best bet is to go with rim specific products. Not only will this keep you from spending money on custom rims that may not work, but it will prevent you from being stuck with a set of wheels that do not meet your standards. When looking at the different brands of rim specific products like Continental, Schwinn, BMX etc, look for a product with a good warranty. The reason for this is that each brand has its own standards, and if the manufacturer does not warrant their product, it is not likely that you will find an alternative brand that will.

Next, take into account rim width. The wider the rim, the more control you will have over steering and braking. This makes the wheels much more comfortable to ride on. Many high end road bikes have very wide rims to allow for a wide range of speeds and maneuvers. If you like to cruise smoothly down the road at top speeds, then this is definitely the type of wheel for you.

Tubeless brakes are something that many new cyclists love. However, tubeless wheels require some extra care. A wheel that is not properly maintained will become clogged with hair, spit up, and other such things that can damage the wheel and make riding painful. The best thing to do is to ensure that you do not install the tubeless rim until it has been properly set up. If you do not remove the old rim locks and clean the wheel before installing the new carbon wheels, you are setting yourself up for pain.

Spoke type Carbon rims also come in several different types. Chrome and aluminum both are used to create these rims. They differ mainly in the way the spokes are set. Chrome rims have the spokes set in, while aluminum uses a different method where the spokes are placed on the outside of the rim. Chrome rims usually have two spoke holes on either side of the center hole. On aluminum rims, the center hole is made larger so that there is more space between the spokes and they do not need to be put in the holes.
